Hands up if any of these apply:
No. 1 — It feels like an absolute slog to get up and go to work, and when you do arrive, you're counting down the minutes to your lunch break.
No. 2 — You’ve been in your role for a few years, but lately, you’ve realised you’re quietly quitting — doing the bare minimum, and sometimes even less.
Or No. 3 — You do your job well, and you're grateful it pays the bills, but there’s this constant niggle in the back of your mind that you could be doing something else.
If any of that resonates, it’s probably for a valid reason. Because chances are, you’ve outgrown a version of your life that once made sense — and it might be time to accept that something else is calling you. Something you've always dreamed of, even if you've never had the time, space, or support to go for it.
And look — I know that life can really life out here. Priorities shift, dreams get parked, and you’ve had to do what you had to do. But your dream? It never really disappeared. It's just waiting on you to make a move.
I felt that same niggle when I was working as a journalism lecturer a good few years ago. It was a pivot I made because I enjoyed teaching and I wanted a part-time setup to support my freelance writing.
But in my heart of hearts, I wanted a “proper media job” – something with a pension, perks, and really, somethingt to give me a chance to get back into an industry I had unfinished business with.
So what did I do?
I turned the niggle into a goal.
That goal became a plan.
And that plan became real through action — and a bit of determination.
Eventually, I landed my dream media job at Time Out. And dare I say... the rest is history.
So if you’re feeling restless about where you are in life — especially your job — ask yourself these three questions:
What would make you feel more content: your current situation or what could be in your future?
How long have you been feeling this way — and what would it look like if you actually did something about it?
What’s really holding you back from making a move?
Now, the answers might not be simple. But exploring them? That’s where progress begins.
